A Typical Week at an English Summer School in the UK, Day by Day

Parents often ask what their child will actually be doing all day. Below is a real sample week from Bournemouth Collegiate School. Exact activities and excursion days vary by school and by intake, but the rhythm is similar across our General English courses: lessons in the morning, activities or excursions in the afternoon, and a supervised programme every evening.

Sunday: arrival

Students arrive, have an induction and a campus tour, and meet the other students at a welcome evening with ice-breaker activities.

Monday: placement test

The first morning starts with a placement test and an induction lesson, so every student joins a class at the right level. In the afternoon there is a walking tour of Bournemouth, and in the evening a welcome disco or drama-based games.

Tuesday to Friday: lessons, trips and activities

  • Tuesday: English lessons, a half-day excursion to Stonehenge, quiz night.
  • Wednesday: English lessons, then football, tennis or arts and crafts, and an international night.
  • Thursday: English lessons, a half-day excursion to Winchester, then a casino night or English conversation club.
  • Friday: English lessons, a Mini Olympics or drumming workshop, then a beach party disco or sports.

Saturday: full-day excursion

Saturday is the big trip: a full day in London with a walking tour and a Thames boat cruise, followed by a relaxed evening of films and board games.

How many hours of English?

15 hours of English lessons a week on the General English course, or 23 hours on Intensive English in Canterbury. Excursions, transport, entrance tickets and evening activities are included, and students are supervised by 1 group leader for every 10 students.

Is it the same at every school?

The structure is similar, but the setting changes the week: five sightseeing visits a week around London at Guildhouse, punting in Cambridge, the beach in Bournemouth. The academic course in Oxford is different again, with three classes a day on a university subject. Each school page shows its own sample week.
